Five brake symptoms ranked from 'book soon' to 'stop driving now' — plus what each one costs if you wait.
Level one: a high-pitched squeal when braking. That is the wear indicator — a small metal tab engineered to sing when pads reach minimum thickness. You have weeks, not months.
Level two: grinding, vibration through the pedal, or a car that pulls while stopping. Grinding means pad material is gone and the backing plate is eating your rotor — every stop now costs more.
Level three — stop driving and call: a soft pedal that sinks, a brake warning light, or a burning smell after normal driving. These signal fluid loss or overheated components. Park it and call (312) 555-0147.
